Vladimir Legoyda: Decision to revoke Metropolitan Onuphry’s citizenship is a political act aimed at putting pressure on entire millions-strong flock of the Ukrainian Church

Mr Vladimir Legoyda, chairman of the Synodal Department for Church’s Relations with Society and Mass Media, issued a statement following news reports of 2nd July saying that His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kyiv and All Ukraine had been stripped of the Ukrainian citizenship.

On October 17, supporters of the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” seized the Archangel-Mikhail Cathedral in Cherkassy during a repeated assault, resulting in injuries among the parishioners and clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Metropolitan Theodosy of Cherkassy and Kanev has been hospitalized.

On 9th July, the Churches in Europe working group of the St. Petersburg Dialogue Forum held its regular meeting in St. Petersburg. Having considered the current level of cooperation within the working group, its members emphasised the importance of maintaining the existing format. They also discussed prospects of expanding cooperation with civil societies in other countries.
